Water Tanks

Thanks to the Fonthill Foundation, Compassion School now has two water tanks.

One water tank serves the chickens and the pigs, and proved its worth in a day after it was installed. The tank was filling and reached three quarters when city water went off for 2 days. Because of the tank, the animals could be cleaned and watered with ease from on site unlike previous occasions where water had to bought in jerry cans from local vendors at inflated prices.

The second tank is installed near the planned new school building for Compassion. It will provide water for the school and the planned store, both to be completed in 2018.

Stationary Donation

Retired business man Raj Khakhria donated a large amount of stationary to Porridge and Rice.

The donation is worth at least £8,000 and will provide much needed stationary for schools in Kenya.

Stationary is very expensive in Kenya and so this kind donation will be of great help. The challenge now is shipping the goods to Kenya.

50p Campaign

Please keep your 50p coins for Porridge and Rice.

There are nearly 50 designs that are worth more than 50p. The rarest design has sold for as much as £3,000.

Porridge and Rice is asking everyone to collect 50p coins. Those that are worth only 50p will be deposited in the bank, while those worth more will be sold to raise money for the charity.

Please help.

Petting Day

The charity held a Petting Day at The Farm at 64 on 29 October spreading the word about Porridge and Rice, and raising money for the work of the charity.

While one small attendee Mia liked the ducks, she LOVED her balloon.

Rotary Conference

Porridge and Rice was invited to take a stand at the Rotary District 1145 Conference in Bournemouth on 7 and 8 October. T he stand was manned by Jude, Ken and Ned. It was wonderful meeting so many Rotarians.

Jude's knitted hedgehogs were especially popular, selling faster than she could knit them.

Toothbrushes

Operation Brush has significantly increased the number of brushes to Porridge and Rice. PaR will now be able to provide over 5 times as many pupils with toothbrushes every 6 months.

Thank you Operation Brush for supporting the children of the Nairobi slums.

Jude

Before children are given the toothbrushes provided by Operation Brush, the children are taught the importance of dental hygiene.

Jude, a trustee and volunteer, taught a number of effective dental hygiene lessons to the pupils of Poridge and Rice schools.

The lesson has been reviewed by Operation Brush.

Food

Lunch is Nyayo bean stew on rice.

Iron deficiency is one of three major problems for the people of the Nairobi slums. The bean stew is designed to ensure this is not a problem for the children of Porridge and Rice schools.

Nyayo beans are very high in Iron, as is the local vegetable Sukuma Wiki, a relative of Kale, which is added to the stew to increase its iron content.
