Third PaR School

Lizpal Education Centre

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Porridge and Rice will begin to support a third school from 15 January 2015, Lizpal Education Centre.

Lizpal is in the Ngando Slums in Nairobi. The school has a total of 10 teachers and 350 pupils.

It is one of 5 schools that was reviewed by Porridge and Rice in 2014 as potential partners.

Lizpal currently has 350 pupils which will take the total pupils supported by Porridge and Rice to just over 800. If the number of pupils at PaR schools continues to grow as it did in 2014, PaR will achieve the goal of feeding 1000 pupils in early 2015.

The head teacher, Beth Wambugu, is fully committed to providing the best education possible for her students. Beth shares the values of Porridge and Rice and will join our Kenyan leadership team. We look forward to a long partnership with Lizpal.

Thank You

We are very grateful to the donors that make our work possible. We appreciate every penny.

Mrs S of Yorkshire donated £10,000 in memory of her mother. Thank you for your kindness.

Ms Jenny Bianco donated £800 for two water tanks, one for Glad Kids and one for Lizpal. Thank you for your generosity.

We raised £12,500 through the Big Give through generous donors like Mrs Sue Wells who donated £5,000. Thank you, thank you, and thank you.

January Trip

Five volunteers will arrive in Nairobi on 14 January 2015. We have a very full agenda so it is going to be an incredibly busy trip.

Highlights for the trip include (1) launching the feeding program at Lizpal Education Centre, our newest member,
(2) launching our health program at each of the three PaR schools to combat malnutrition and NTDs, and
(3) making improvements to facilities like installing two 5000 litre water tanks.

Photographs of activities will appear on Facebook.

T-Shirts

Porridge and Rice has T-shirts in red, blue and yellow for sale at £10 each including postage within the UK.

By buying a T-shirt, you will not only help support the work we do, but each time you wear it, you will help us promote the work we do and generate more supporters.

If you wish to order a T-shirt make a £10 donation on the PaR website and state in the comments that you wish to order a T-shirt adding both the colour you want (yellow, red, or blue) and your size (S, M, L, XL, XXL).

Health Program

The consequences of Helminths (worms), vitamin and micronutrient deficiencies, and poor hygiene and sanitation are severe including blindness, cognitive impairment, and permanent immune damage.

In January 2015, Porridge and Rice is launching its health program to combat these barriers to learning and raise health levels for the pupils that we support.

Porridge and Rice will teach hygiene and santitation as part of a WASH program, and put in place routines to sustain good hygiene and sanitation for the long term. This alone according to WHO research will improve health and reduce deaths.

In addition, Porridge and Rice will implement a vitamin and micronutrient program underpinned by a balanced diet and supplements following best practice as outlined by the WHO. For example, vitamin A deficiency is a serious problem qith major causes like cognitive impairment and blindness. Porridge and Rice will be providing vitamin A supplements to all people.

The goal is to make the health program as much a part of the work Porridge and Rice does, as its feeding program.
